S.C. Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM)
As a school recognized for academic excellence where 100% of our students attend college, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) invites applications for a College Counselor who will work with students, parents, faculty, and college admissions offices to support and assist students in optimizing their college choices.
This position will join a college counseling staff of three, including a director and another college counselor. All three members of the staff work to develop programs that support the college and career needs of our growing and diverse student population. He/she will also steward students (and their parents) through the college search and admissions process, identifying colleges that are a good fit and scholarships that can supplement their education.
This is a full-time (12-month) position with State benefits and a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position start date is late fall, 2017, but it will remain open until filled.

Requirements for this position include: thorough knowledge of college admissions and financial aid practices; demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and parents; excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking ability and experience in writing letters of recommendation; well-developed advising skills; familiarity with utilizing computer software (i.e. Naviance); and willingness to actively engage in the School community.
Master's degree in educational counseling, higher education/student affairs or other related field with a minimum of three years in a high school, college counseling, or college admissions setting required, but a bachelor’s degree with comparable and relevant experience will be considered. Experience working with high school students in an advanced and specialized academic environment is preferable.

The Director oversees the admissions process and provides leadership in developing and implementing innovative enrollment strategies and... initiatives designed to attract students to an intensive two-year residential program and a three year virtual engineering program.The Director will directly supervise all admissions staff and work closely with the staff of the virtual engineering program to achieve incoming classes for each program that are optimal in number, strong in academic ability, and diverse in racial, cultural, and geographic background. This includes collaborating with marketing to ensure print pieces and electronic media appropriately represent the school’s strategic initiatives and program goals.A master’s degree in counseling, student affairs administration, educational leadership, or related field with seven years of full-time, progressive experience in admissions is preferred. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree, significant and progressive admissions experience, and a demonstrated record in related functions may also be considered. Qualified applicants must have excellent communication skills; demonstrated leadership and coordination capabilities; the ability to interact with prospective students, families, faculty, and high school counselors and educators. He/she must also have knowledge of computer databases and spreadsheets. Candidates with experience working with advanced high school students in a specialized academic and/or college environment are welcomed.
