Under the guidance of the Executive Director of University Admissions, the Admissions Counselor works as part of a team to enable the Office of University Admissions to meet its enrollment goals by actively participating in recruitment initiatives targeting prospective students (undergraduate and graduate); manages an assigned recruitment territory; traveling extensively throughout the year; evaluates students applications and makes admission decisions; and assist with recruitment programming.
Represent the University to prospective students and the general public with the highest degree of professionalism through an array of outreach programs and activities;
Traveling in and out of state during peak recruitment period (September to December and February to May), to engage and inform prospective and current students and their families as well as develop positive educational partnerships and working relationships with external stakeholders such as high school, community college and college counselors;
Provide a full range of advisory and counseling services to prospective students and associated community constituencies regarding NJIT admissions and related topics;
Execute communication on admission and/or related matters with prospective, applied and admitted students via phone, skype, email and/or in-person meetings;
Timely follow through on communication plans by initiating & answering correspondence and inquiries from prospective students and their families;
Familiar with both undergraduate and graduate academic programs and admission criteria;
Participating in on-campus visitation programs, new student orientations, campus retention programs, and commencement events;
Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director of University Admissions.
Review individual applications and evaluate candidates for admission eligibility; including conducting interviews, troubleshooting applications, virtual events, and overseeing and/or coordinating communication with applicants;
Respond to inquiries and independently researches and resolves problems;
Respond to walk-in, e-mail and telephone inquiries;
Maintain student records in the Student Information system.
Special Project Programming Duties:
Plan, develop implement and evaluate programs, special projects, events, and other recruitment initiatives geared to recruiting students within targeted populations and facilitating admission into NJIT.
Creates and manages communication strategies for prospective and admitted students utilizing tools such as customer relationship management to send out letters, emails and making phone calls and/or personal appointments.
Utilize a variety of software programs including, but not limited to, Banner, Outlook, Word, Excel and other related programs;
Attend and assist in all on-campus and virtual recruitment events including Open Houses, Information Sessions, admitted students receptions and/or Saturday information sessions.
General duties as assigned by the Executive Director of University Admissions.
Bachelor's degree in a related field. Strong analytical skills for reading applications, answering questions, and strategizing recruitment territory and travel schedule.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to analyze and interpret the needs of the students and offer appropriate solutions. Must be able to work independently, exercise discretion, and assume responsibility.
Must have an excellent public speaking skills and ability to present the University to individual students as well as large audiences in a positive manner. Strong written and verbal skills to support relationship building with prospective students and other constituents.
Valid driver's license, passport and personal vehicle are required to perform job functions.
Availability to work regular weekend and evenings to participate in recruitment events.
Extensive travel required for approximately three to four months in the fall and approximately two months in the spring.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint); the ability to quickly adapt to new and changing software systems is also preferred.
