Reporting to the Director of Admission and the Co-Chair of the Education & Child Development Department, the Admissions Counselor is one of the primary contacts for prospective students and their families, school counselors and advisors, and other individuals or organizations involved in the college selection process. The Admissions Counselor will represent the Education & Child Development Department at on- and off-campus events and recruit students interested in the Education & Child Development program. In close consultation with the Admissions Office and department personnel, the Admissions Counselor will manage ongoing strategic communications to prospective students and their families as well as and school counselors and advisors.
Hours:Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
Full Time/Part Time status:Full time. The position is a grant-funded, contractual position through June 30, 2018 and is expected to become a permanent position contingent upon funding and the successful applicant's satisfactory performance.

Recruiting prospective students by visiting area high schools, community colleges, community events, and college fairs; conducting classroom and community presentations
Creating and maintaining professional relationships with school counselors and advisors and other individuals or organizations involved in the college section process.
Serving as the primary contact to prospective students and their families, school counselors, and advisors, and other individuals or organizations involved in the college selection process
Developing promotional and student advising materials in collaboration with department personnel, the Admission Office, and the Office of Communications
Attending and assisting with the coordination of recruitment functions, including counselor workshops, information sessions, and open houses
Communicating with prospective students through multiple mediums, including individual appointments, telephone, email, texting, social media sites, and video/virtual chat
Maintaining current knowledge of college curriculum, rules, regulations, and guidelines applicable to students
Other duties as assigned
Position Specifications and Requirements:
The minimum qualifications for this position are:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
1+ years of experience with admissions, marketing, or sales
Valid driver's license from State of residency and dependable transportation
Ability and willingness to travel in and out of state
Availability and willingness to work evenings and weekend hours
Excellent professional demeanor
Proficiency using Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other email, database and spreadsheet applications and Adobe Acrobat.
Excellent listening, communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to communicate clearly in person and writing
Organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented individual who is able to work effectively as part of a team
Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality
Ability to work independently, completing work in a thorough and timely manner and balancing competing demands with courtesy and tact
Ability to courteously and accurately provide information to employees, students and the general public
Ability to quickly learn and retain a large body of general College information, including activities, functions, personnel, rules, policies, regulations, procedures, etc.
The preferred but not required qualifications for this position are:
Higher Education work experience, particularly liberal arts or Whittier College experience
Degree in Child Development or Education
Experience with Elucian Systems
Experience using student information systems, customer relationship management (CRM) systems and communication technologies to recruit and enroll students
Oral and written Spanish language skills
Knowledge of college admissions or marketing and sales
The successful candidate will possess outstanding communication skills with ability to create interest in Whittier College among prospective students. This professional must be enthusiastic, people-oriented, and enjoy working with high school and college students. As a new position, the incumbent must be a highly motivated, creative, and results-oriented person with exceptional organization skills and a positive attitude.
