The Office of Admission and Financial Aid invites applications for an Admission Counselor/Assistant Director of Admission who will report to the Director of Admission. This is a great opportunity to work with a highly successful and dynamic team in recruiting students for admission to the College. The position is full-time and benefits eligible. Located in the heart of Claremont, California, 35 miles east of Los Angeles, Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college offering degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Summary of Job Responsibilities:
The Admission Counselor/Assistant Director is expected to become fully engaged in a broad range of recruitment and admission activities, which include but are not limited to coordinating the overnight hosting program, representing the College to prospective students and their families, establishing relationships with high school counselors and teachers in promoting the College’s visibility, and counseling prospective students, their families and others with regard to applying for admission to the College.
Summary of Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience: Experience that has resulted in an understanding and appreciation of highly selective admission is appealing but not required.
- Licenses/Certificates: Valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurance carrier.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education and Harvey Mudd College’s mission “…to educate engineers, scientists and mathematicians well versed in all of these areas and in the humanities and social sciences so that they may assume leadership in their fields with a clear understanding of the impact of their work on society.” Ability to: (a) work flexibly and maintain productivity while working under pressure; (b) work cooperatively and sensitively with individuals from diverse cultures, ethnic groups, lifestyles and backgrounds; (c) establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students; (d) conceptualize, design, develop and implement projects while working with a diverse constituency; (e) work independently, and as a team member, in an academic setting and with the public; (f) work independently and exercise sound judgment in confidential or sensitive situations; (g) recognize patterns, anticipate problems, and recommend solutions; (h) use technology easily and effectively to enhance productivity and to assess progress toward office goals; and (i) use new data systems effectively. Excellent presentation skills in disseminating admission information cohesively to large and small audiences. Possession of excellent verbal, written, listening, and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of audiences including prospective students, their families, school officials, guidance counselors, community officials, campus colleagues and the public. Possession of a strong work ethic and personal integrity. Possession of a sense of humor is extremely valuable. Knowledge of basic computer skills (e.g. Microsoft products). Able and willing to travel (up to two weeks at a time, seasonal); and work weekend and evening hours, as needed.
