The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admission is a senior member of the Dean of Undergraduate Admission staff. The position oversees the daily operations in the Office of Undergraduate Admission which includes the creation and development of programs for recruiting undergraduate first-year and transfer students, manages all admission on-campus programs, supervises the admission recruitment staff and makes recommendations for continual improvement.
Hire, train, mentor and supervise admission recruitment staff; and evaluate approximately 15 staff members for professional growth; assign programs and projects as well as daily activities of staff; evaluate staff and recommend promotions and merit increases.
Manage the daily operations of the undergraduate admission recruitment team; use data, surveys and best practices to guide new initiatives and strategies in order to achieve the University's enrollment goals; approve the day-to-day recruitment and admission calendar including staff coverage; develop and convey a university recruitment message that is relevant, authentic and effective.
Plan and oversee the review process for undergraduate applications; establish a review and decision calendar in cooperation with the Dean and Associate Vice President.
Oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of recruitment programs both on and off campus; analyze program data and survey information to evaluate and improve programs; provide feedback to team on effectiveness of recruitment activities
Represent SMU in the admission and college counseling arena; maintain active involvement and leadership in professional organizations; encourage involvement among recruitment staff; develop a plan for communications and relationship-building with high school counselors; collaborate with colleagues at peer and aspirant institutions on appropriate joint activities.
Recruit prospective students to SMU in assigned territory; travel extensively and speak publicly to individuals and groups; participate in college fairs and high school visits; conduct market research and planning for territory; evaluate applications for admission from students in assigned territory.
Represent the Office of Admission on university committees and projects; assist with initiatives and programs for the Division of Enrollment Services.
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree is required.
A minimum of seven years college admission experience is required, preferably at a residential not-for-profit, selective college or university.
A minimum of three years supervisory or management experience of professional full-time staff is required.
High school counseling experience is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate a strong knowledge of admission and recruitment practices.
Candidate must possess strong verbal, interpersonal and written communications skills to effectively work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Candidate must demonstrate strong organizational, project and time management skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and constituents concurrently.
Candidate must have strong problem-solving and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to identify and evaluate problems, as well as use quantitative and observational data to analyze a problem and recommend solutions.
Candidate must be a self-starter with minimal supervision and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively in writing with a strong focus on attention to detail.
A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook) is essential.
Knowledge and familiarity of CRM systems is desirable.
Position requires heavy travel and attendance at evening and weekend recruitment programs on and off campus.
Valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
