Position: Admission Counselor for 2018-19 School Year

Harvard-Westlake School, an independent coeducational college preparatory school for students in grades 7-12 school in Los Angeles serving nearly 1600 students, seeks to hire an exceptional and highly qualified Admission Counselor for a one-year position beginning Summer 2018 through June 30, 2019. The successful candidate will interview applicant families, serve as a voice and advocate in the admission review process, and collaborate with the Admission team to coordinate and organize admission events.
The Harvard-Westlake Admission Office is highly visible and fast-paced, and the Admission Counselor will play an integral role in a prospective family’s first impression of the School. It is essential to interact effectively with and serve a variety of constituents. Warmth and competence in genuinely connecting with students and families from myriad experiences, team spirit, and a lively sense of humor is required.

This is a one-year appointment and is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Admission. The Admission Office will open a search for a permanent appointment in Spring 2018. The hired Admission Counselor is welcome to apply.
Primary Responsibilities for the Admissions Counselor include, but are not limited to:
Serves as one of Harvard-Westlake’s strongest advocates and ambassadors, promoting the School to various constituents. Articulates the School’s mission in advancing the School to families, elementary schools, outreach programs, and other professional organizations.
With the Admission team, plans events including the Admission Family Visiting Days, evening events for prospective parents, off-campus outreach efforts, and other activities that bring families and visitors to campus.
Interviews prospective students and evaluates applications for admission.
Supports admission parent ambassadors (currently, 35 volunteers) who serve as hosts and tour guides.
Supports institutional outreach to new schools, underrepresented communities, assists with access efforts.
Collaborates to determine trends, analyze data, plan programs as they relate to demographic realities of Los Angeles to introduce Harvard-Westlake to communities unfamiliar with the School.
Supports ISEE test administration.
Requirements and Attributes:
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Positive, high-energy, passionate, can-do spirit with eagerness to work hard as both leader and team member. Possesses innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
Previous independent school admissions experience strongly preferred, as is familiarity with an independent school environment.
Ability to deal diplomatically and comfortably with a diverse community of parents, students, alumni, administrators, staff, and faculty.
Exceptional writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
High degree of organization with effectiveness at multi-tasking.
Attention to detail and ability to take pride in work.
Cooperative team approach with colleagues and willingness to take on responsibilities beyond those explicitly defined.
Grace, conspicuous integrity, intellectual curiosity, and calmness under pressure with sense of humor.
Sound judgment relative to confidential projects, sensitive matters, including effective communication regarding such matters to appropriate individuals.
Computer fluency and strong database skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe PDF, and Power Point, at a minimum).
