The Executive Director, International Student Initiative (ISI), leads cross-campus internationalization efforts to enhance UBC's international reputation, deepen the university's engagement with the international community, and enrich the learning environment for UBC students by recruiting a diversity of well-qualified international students from different backgrounds, countries, and school systems. The primary objective of the ISI is to achieve the international undergraduate enrolment goals of the Faculties of both campuses, as well as of Vantage College, and other international pathway programs offered by UBC.
In keeping with the university's overall international strategy, the Executive Director develops and leads an effective marketing and recruitment strategy to meet the international enrolment targets of each campus through direct and indirect recruitment of well-qualified international students. The Executive Director develops and leads strategic use of international student financial assistance funds to recruit, yield and retain international talent and create access to UBC for outstanding international students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
In addition, the Executive Director monitors worldwide economic, political, and demographic trends affecting international student mobility patterns, including federal and provincial international strategies and policies affecting international student flows to British Columbia and to Canada. This position advises of potential impacts on international students, anticipates opportunities, ensures risk-balancing across the university's international student markets, and adjusts recruitment and marketing strategies and tactics in response.

A master's degree in international development, international marketing, or another relevant discipline is required. . Proven successful senior management experience in recruitment, including international recruitment is essential. Over 10 years of related experience or a combination of education and experience.
Strategic and entrepreneurial thinking; ability to identify and act on new opportunities; resourcefulness with effective problem-solving skills and superior ability to manage change are essential.
Proven ability to carry out strategic planning, with superior organizational ability and a proven track record in developing positive working relationships are essential to effectively implement strategies for a large, complex multi-faceted organization with multiple stakeholders and sometimes competing interests.
Proven ability to effectively manage operations, to budget, and demonstrated success in sound fiscal management and strategic use of funds to achieve results and weigh opportunities versus
costs. Experience managing large financial aid programs in support of post-secondary students would be a definite asset.
Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgement and initiate quick action when confronted with unusual or unexpected circumstances that frequently arise in the international arena. Proven ability to assess and manage risks inherent in international travel and to anticipate and mitigate other risks that may arise for an internationally-engaged organization.
Extensive experience living and working internationally with a thorough understanding of the opportunities and challenges within the competitive field of international education would be a strength. Sound knowledge of international schools and international secondary school curricula is required.
Developed relationships with counselling communities and other international partners would be an asset.
Knowledge and experience leveraging recruitment technologies and web-based recruitment management and communication tools to support international recruitment and marketing would be an asset.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills with experience in public speaking and writing reports/proposals; ability to use and understand data to monitor and achieve results and support pursuit of opportunities or direction.
Proven ability to build, manage and motivate a large, culturally diverse and high-performance team. Proven collaborator, with the ability to effectively work with others in support of coordinated domestic and international student recruitment strategies.
