Woodberry Forest School is accepting applications for an assistant/associate director of college counseling. Woodberry’s next assistant/associate director of college counseling with be a critical member of a five-member team including the assistant headmaster for admissions and college counseling, director of college counseling, associate director of college counseling, and associate director of admission & college counseling operations.
The assistant/associate director position is a full-time, twelve-month appointment. College counselors work with students and families across all four years of high school, beginning with group and general programming in the freshman year, and building toward a pairing of counselor and individual student in the fall of the junior year. The assistant/associate director will advise students and their families on all aspects of the college search and application process. Specifically, the assistant/associate director will help students identify colleges of interest, support students in completing their applications, write thoughtful letters of recommendation, advocate appropriately for students, serve as a resource for parents, and participate in professional organizations, conferences, and college visit programs, both on and off-campus. The assistant/associate director of college counseling will also help lead and coordinate the school’s testing program.
The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a desire to work closely with a range of talented students, an appreciation of single-sex education, and a willingness to engage in the life of a residential school community. Candidates must be strong writers, good listeners, detail and deadline-oriented, and excited about working collaboratively with colleagues and students. A bachelor’s degree is required, and professional experience in college admission and/or college counseling is preferred. As a member of a boarding school community, the assistant/associate director will also be involved in other aspects of school life. Depending on the interest of the successful candidate and the needs of the school, teaching and coaching opportunities may be possible.
