Role summary: EF Academy offers an unrivaled level of personal support and guidance to students at our boarding schools and offices around the world. We prepare students for success by working with them to discover and develop their strengths and by providing them with an academic environment that will see them thrive. The Senior Associate Director of University Advising is responsible for creating, implementing and leading the college counseling program at EF Academy New York. As well as working with a cohort of students and guides them through the process of university and college applications as well as any other post-secondary explorations to ensure their success in college, career, and life.
The responsibilities for the role of Senior Associate Director for University Advising includes, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise and support university advising department staff
Develop and guide a strategic vision for the department
Manage a departmental budget
Work closely with the Academic department on curricular issues
Provide updates to the Assistant Head of School on a regular basis regarding University Advising
Organize and lead professional learning for the University Advising department
Build an understanding of each student’s strengths, weaknesses, interests, and areas for growth
Develop strong relationships with students based on mutual trust and respect
Proactively lead students, parents, faculty, and staff through the nuanced realities of selective college admission.
Display strong analytical writing skills and the ability to craft letters of recommendation filled with relevant information
Review and provide feedback for student essays
Provide individual student counseling to support the university and college application process in the US and abroad
Assist students in the development of an appropriate college list
Continuously monitor the academic progress of students, meeting with all students at minimum twice per academic year
Collect, interpret and maintain student records (i.e. transcripts) to ensure they are up-to-date and sufficient for the application process
Develop a University Advising curriculum and create resources to educate students in a classroom setting
Assist with the administration of the SAT examination
Work with students to help them understand university enrollment processes such as completing housing applications, registering for orientation, submitting deposits, etc.
Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of colleges and universities as well as a contextual grasp of the current college admissions landscape in the US and abroad
Actively participate in local and national associations relevant to our profession, including NACAC, College Board and International ACAC, as well as college tours and networking with colleagues in college counseling and college admissions
Promote EF Academy’s reputation with colleges by serving as an advocate for our students
Connect with students who speak English as a second language
Educate students in a classroom and group presentation settings
Demonstrate effective public speaking skills and the desire to participate in events for students, parents, and colleagues
Build relationships with EF Academy colleagues around the world working in admissions offices to support country-specific needs for students and families
Liaise with the Pathway Manager team to ensure that curricular and extra-curricular choices reflect the students’ long-term goals and university interests
Work closely with the academic faculty to generate letters of recommendation
Update parents and admissions offices on the progress of students and communicating any concerns and helping to celebrate successes
Manage student and parent aims so that they are realistic while pursuing the best possible results
Respond in a timely and professional manner (in line with school guidelines) to any parental or admissions requests
Meet with current and potential families to inform them of the role of University Advising
Complete paperwork and day to day office tasks on a timely basis
Submit supporting application documents via Naviance
Maintain an up-to-date record of admissions decisions in Naviance
Take a team-oriented approach to all aspects of the college counseling process and a collaborative spirit of engagement in all professional endeavors
Manage and file all required copies of reports, records and other documents (including disciplinary files).
Monday-Friday, arrive on campus by 8:00 am; depart after 4:45 pm Mon-Thurs; on Friday depart after last duties are completed
Participate in student induction week activities, and course selection activities
Attend various school events throughout the academic year, including, but not limited to parents’ weekend, graduation, the school play(s), arts nights and sporting events, etc.
Chaperone college-related events
Travel to admissions offices as needed to meet with parents, potential students and colleagues while supporting the promotion and growth of EF Academy New York
Any other duties as assigned
Candidates should possess:
Minimum 5-10 years of experience in college counseling and/or admissions work, or another related field
