Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment

Reporting directly to the Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, this is an exciting opportunity amidst the changing backdrop of higher education and the growing vibrancy and diversity of the St. Louis region.
The successful candidate will provide transparent and collaborative leadership and oversight to two units, the Offices of Admissions and the Registrar, and engage with our campus community to oversee the university’s strategic enrollment plan and improve enrollment and retention metrics. The Associate Vice Chancellor must understand the increasing complexities of higher education, and have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in an educational setting.
Under the leadership of Chancellor Kristin Sobolik and in the midst of implementing a five-year strategic plan, UMSL is solidifying its commitment to the five Missouri compacts for excellence in the 21st century: Student Success, Research and Creative Works, Community Engagement and Economic Development, Inclusive Excellence and Planning, Operations and Stewardship. Across nine academic units, UMSL offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs to traditional and non-traditional students as well as continuing and adult learners. THE POSITION The Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment will serve as the university’s chief enrollment officer with the principal responsibility for implementing UMSL’s inaugural comprehensive strategic enrollment plan focused on recruitment, retention, and degree completion that was recently developed through a campus-wide strategic enrollment planning process aligned with the university's strategic plan. The Associate Vice Chancellor has direct managerial responsibility and oversight for the Offices of Admissions and the Registrar and will provide campus leadership for strategies that focus on recruitment and retention of UMSL students.
Along with developing and enhancing valuable partnerships with external constituents, this position requires interaction, collaboration, and partnership with members of the Provost’s leadership team – including the academic Deans, Student Success, Student Affairs, Access & Student Support, and the Graduate School – as well as the offices of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Marketing and Communication, Student Financial Services, University Advancement, Athletics, among others. The Associate Vice Chancellor reports to the Provost and is a member of the Provost’s Leadership Council and the Executive Policy Group.
A Master's degree in a related area is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a doctorate.
Significant experience in an enrollment management unit/area (e.g., Admissions, Financial Aid, and/or Registrar), including at least three (3) years at the director level or above.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of comprehensive college or university enrollment management plans with evidence of effectiveness in marketing, recruitment and retention.
Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of data-driven strategic plans.
Proven ability to organize administrative units to maximize achievement of recruiting and enrollment goals.
An understanding of the increasing complexities, challenges, and opportunities of higher education.
Other desirable skills and experience include:
At least seven (7) years of significant experience in an enrollment management unit/area (e.g., Admissions, Financial Aid, and/or Registrar), including at least three (3) years at the director level or above.
Strong leadership and administrative skills managing strategic and operational aspects of enrollment management programs including, but not limited to strategic planning, personnel, budget and fiscal management, web-based technology enhancement, and continuous improvement assessment of the unit’s operations in all areas.
Strong knowledge and understanding of market trends and best practices in student recruitment and retention as well as familiarity with diverse student populations and their needs, ideally in an urban setting.
Experience with complex budget structures and resource allocation as well as strategic planning in a public higher education setting.
Ability to serve as a trusted representative and strong advocate of the unit and/or institution when engaging with internal and external stakeholders as well as the institution’s leadership.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, as well as outstanding listening skills.
Proven ability to foster collaborative efforts and partnership building with all internal constituent groups (faculty, academic departments, administration, students, and staff) as well as external constituents within a diverse community.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify, consult, and resolve issues that impact institutional needs and priorities and the ability to utilize data and data tools to make sound decisions and foster improvement.
Visionary, creative, and innovative leadership style, with an open mindset and the willingness to (re)evaluate and rethink processes and procedures.
Demonstrated commitment in promoting personal and civic responsibility as well as cultural diversity.
Experience in hiring and supervising staff, and providing opportunities for professional development.
Passion for and commitment to a system of shared governance.
Strong commitment to institutional values and inclusive excellence in all actions as well as the desire to further leverage community engagement.
