Washington and Lee University is seeking Seasonal Application Readers for the 2021-22 undergraduate admission application reading season. Under the supervision of an Associate Dean of Admissions, the Seasonal Reader is expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week, including training, to review first year applications. All applications are read online. Candidates must have a computer and access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection in a private, secure location.
Washington and Lee University actively promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in their areas of expertise.
The Seasonal Reader plays a critical role in helping the undergraduate admission staff holistically review a large and diverse applicant pool with care, optimism and integrity.
In keeping with a holistic evaluation philosophy, the reader will be responsible for reviewing high school transcripts, personal essays, recommendation letters and other application materials, considering them in the context of each students’ life experiences and background, and submitting thorough and detailed evaluation notes.
Seasonal Readers must participate in mandatory reader training (dates to be determined) and be ready to begin reviewing files no later than early December. Some Seasonal Readers may be asked to start in late October.
Maintain steady and frequent communication with the Admissions office and be receptive to guidance and feedback from senior readers.
Read at a pace that allows for the completion of a weekly target number of applications between December and mid-March, with a short break during the holiday period. The number of hours required and the number of files to be read may vary slightly depending on the month, with December through February experiencing the highest volume.
Participate in periodic virtual reader meetings. Seasonal Readers will work with full-time reading staff through our comprehensive holistic reading process.
Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree is required. Well-developed computer skills, preferably with Technolutions’ Slate CRM, and the ability to adapt to new technology are crucial. Candidates must be able to manage their time well, possess strong attention to detail, adapt quickly to change, meet specific deadlines and read a large volume of applications under firm time constraint. Readers should possess keen analytical skills and concise writing abilities. Prior experience in selective college admissions is preferred. Must have a computer and access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection in a private, secure location.
