Associate Dean of Admission for Guest Services and UVA Community Development
University of Virginia
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Type: Full Time
The Office of Undergraduate Admission at the University of Virginia invites applications for an Associate Dean of Admission for Guest Services and UVA Community Development.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Enrollment, the Office of Undergraduate Admission partners with the Office of Student Financial Services, the University Registrar, and the Virginia College Advising Corps, as a critical member of the University’s Enrollment team. The team’s mission is: to care for students from their first interaction with the University through Final Exercises and beyond; to compete for great students from all walks of life who will make each other better; and to collaborate joyfully with colleagues to help these students make the most of their gifts and their time on our campus, which we call the Grounds; and to increase the number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented high-school students who enter and complete higher education.
The field of undergraduate admission offers a window into the wider, dynamic world of modern higher education administration. As an Associate Dean you develop working relationships, which involves collaboration across a broad set of groups and individuals, from students, teachers, and families to alumni, athletic staff, school counselors, student support staff, and all the members of our college community. We are seeking caring, creative, collaborative, and student-centered individuals who are interested in a career that is fulfilling and rewarding and who want to help us strengthen the excellence, diversity, success, and sense of community of the UVA student body for the next decade and beyond. The Office of Admission is committed to the belief that diversity in all its forms is not merely a desirable complement to excellence; it is an essential component of it. The diversity of our team, and our team’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion strengthens our ability to serve our students, faculty, and the University community.
The Office of Undergraduate Admission currently hosts 60,000+ annual visitors to the University’s Grounds. On Grounds events include but are not limited to: admission tours and information sessions, special group visits, alumni and UVA community programs, admitted student open houses, college counselor workshops, and summer enrichment programs. In recent years, the Office of Admission has expanded virtual event offerings in response to the pandemic, including virtual admitted and prospective student panels, information sessions, chats, and workshops.
Reporting to the Director of Admission, and serving on the office leadership team, the Associate Dean is responsible for developing virtual and in-person programming for our visitors to ensure that every guest feels welcomed and leaves more knowledgeable about themselves, UVA, and our admission process. The on campus visit experience is widely recognized as the most influential factor in prospective students’ enrollment decision making processes. As the Office of Admission moves away from some of the more traditional recruitment strategies tied to admission officer travel, the Associate Dean will have a unique opportunity to develop new programming to attract a talented and diverse prospective student population to explore UVA.
The Associate Dean will create, lead, and assess a caring, comprehensive, and data driven programming plan designed to showcase the University’s academic, cultural, and social communities. The Associate Dean will supervise and mentor a dedicated team of full-time admission professionals, admission office interns, and student volunteers who will support the Associate Dean in the execution of all On Grounds and Virtual programming.
Additionally, the Associate Dean is responsible for re-establishing, strengthening, and growing partnerships with faculty, student support offices, UVA school administrators, student organizations, Student Financial Services, the Registrar, and the Virginia College Advising Corps, among others. These collaborative partnerships are critical to the success of future in-person recruitment events at UVA and will require a great deal of attention from the Associate Dean.
Other responsibilities include serving on University-wide committees on behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Admission, maintaining and utilizing data to enhance the recruitment of underrepresented and underserved populations, conducting information sessions for prospective students and their families, evaluating first-year and transfer applications, coordinating high school and special groups’ visitations, and working closely with the Office of Diversity and Equity and the Office of African American Affairs, as well as a multitude of student organizations on the University Grounds.
