Brief Description of Duties:
The Admissions Counselor is responsible for recruiting a pool of appropriate undergrad students, within an aggressive undergraduate student recruitment and outreach plan, for the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program. The Admissions Counselor will conduct information sessions for prospective students, parents and school counselors, as well as coordinate yield initiatives and events to impact enrollment. The Admissions Counselor is also responsible for building relationships with feeder institutions. This position is part of the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program, an exciting new initiative that will provide a training ground for 50 students each year to create the next generation of diverse leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and will vastly improve the pathway to STEM careers for underrepresented students at Stony Brook University.
Duties:
- Reporting to the Executive Director of Admissions (or their designee) and in consultation with the Executive Director of the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program to implement a strategic and robust plan for diversity recruitment for the Simons STEM Scholars program. Foster existing relationships as well as create new meaningful relationships with feeder schools, HBCU and Hispanic serving institutions, SBU alumni, SBU undergraduate programs in STEM fields, and other professional associations to develop mutually beneficial recruitment relationships.
- Participate in high school visits, college fairs, pathway programs and targeted outreach to drive prospective student engagement. This position will also be responsible for raising the visibility of the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program by participating in these efforts.
- Reporting to the Executive Director of Admissions (or their designee) and in consultation with the Executive Director of the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program to develop and implement a recruitment communication plan. The position will also provide application guidance utilizing the CRM system in EM. This position will be expected to learn and utilize the application processing system, initially review application materials, and to communicate with students and faculty regarding processing, timelines, and requirements.
- Employ social media and other outlets to create a meaningful online presence, communicate with prospective students in a systematic fashion and advertise exciting opportunities on campus. Participate in open houses, admitted student receptions and other yield events. Meet with underrepresented applicants to Stony Brook’s Simons Scholars program during the recruitment and interview phases of consideration, connecting them with potential communities of interest across campus.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
Evening and weekend work may be required at times.

Required Qualifications: (As evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three [3] years of directly related full-time administrative experience working with Admissions or student services related field, in a college or university setting. Experience in student recruitment events in a Higher Education environment. Experience planning and executing events. Experience with programs such as PeopleSoft, Banner, Slate and/or Hobsons Connect. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience with recruiting undergrad students at high school visits and/or college fairs. Experience working with students from historical marginalized groups. Familiarity with interfacing with academic departments and working with administration policies/procedures at a large college or university. Experience with reviewing and rendering decisions on admissions applications.
