Senior Admissions Counselor, Community Outreach and College Access Coordinator

Summary of Position
The Undergraduate Office of Admissions is seeking a highly motivated, focused, and results-oriented Senior Admissions Counselor, who will have special responsibility working
with prospective historically underrepresented students in higher education, including but not limited to, First-Generation College Students, multicultural and indigenous students.
This person will facilitate the enrollment of qualified students from a variety of backgrounds and represent the University of Minnesota to the public, provide exceptional
customer service to prospective students and their families, and play a crucial role in shaping the Universityâ™s undergraduate class.

This is a 100%, full-time, 12-month, on-campus, annually renewable appointment in the academic professional and administrative (P&A) personnel series. Most work is conducted
during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. However, evening and weekend work is occasionally required, as necessary, to properly execute the duties of this role.
Occasional remote work may be accommodated at the discretion of the Office of Admissions when such remote work is in the interest of the University.

Must be eligible to work in the United States; this position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Recruitment and Outreach 25%

• Recruit and facilitate enrollment of prospective undergraduate students, primarily from Minnesota.
• Responsible for community outreach and recruitment of historically underrepresented students in higher education, including but not limited to, First-Generation College Students, multicultural and indigenous students
• Plan and execute a recruitment travel plan to Minnesota-based high schools
• Implement extensive recruitment and relationship-building efforts utilizing written, telephone, and in-person communication to prospective students, applicants, and admitted students.
• Serve as contact for prospective students in Minnesota.
• Present at high school programs, recruitment events, and school counselor meetings.
• Represent the University of Minnesota Twin Cities at college fairs and other recruitment events hosted in market

Counseling, Advising and Customer Service 20%

• Provide admissions counseling to prospective students, their parents, and guidance counselors.
• Serve as one-stop contact for freshman admissions; provide advising and assistance throughout the admission process to students, family members, and high school counselors.
• Provide extra mile customer service to prospective students and their families regarding admissions.

Visits and Events 20%

• Participate in the execution of the officeâ™s Visits and Events programs
• Meet with students and their families on campus to provide admissions information and support them in taking the next step in the enrollment process.
• Event planning responsibilities
• Deliver on-campus information sessions to recruit students to apply and enroll at the University of Minnesota
• Coordinate specialized group visits for students visiting campus in partnership with our visit office leadership and campus groups.

Partnerships and Relationship Management 20%

• Serve as a key liaison with high school counselors, independent counselors, and other school officials.
• Liaison to key campus departments and student groups such as, but not limited to, MCAE, Multicultural Student Engagement, student cultural centers, Circle of Indigenous Nations, and the First-Gen Student Success Center.
• Undocumented, DACAmented, and mixed status Programs Advocate & Coordinator

Application Review 10%

• Evaluate academic and other credentials for admission decision and counseling purposes.
• Participate in committee review

Other Duties as Assigned 5%

• Liaise on communication projects
• Maintain key community resources for underrepresented students

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS degree plus at least 2 years of relevant experience, or master's degree.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering the Universityâ™s mission of an inclusive and welcoming University community
• Experience working underrepresented students in educational or community settings
• Must have a valid driverâ™s license; must be able to travel regionally or nationally for extended periods
• Ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking skills and experience.
• Ability to work independently within established guidelines, make decisions according to policies and procedures, and exercise judgment in recommending procedural changes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Fluent Spanish or Hmong speaking candidates
• Public speaking skills/experience
• Community based organization experience that work with or serve historically underrepresented communities in higher education
• Higher Education Admissions experience.
• Prior experience in college admissions and recruitment or a closely related unit such as campus tours, orientation, college access community based organizations or other direct work with student outreach and enrollment.
• Event planning or project management experience.
• University of Minnesota experience defined broadly such as former student, graduate, employee, or community member of any campus.
• Demonstrated experience with Technolutions Slate.
